State Coordinator Position

Looking for State Coordinators

With spring around the corner it is a great opportunity to get our fifth grade students thinking about the bicycle as a way of getting places (for fun or for transportation).  Ask each student to create a poster that reveals his or her understanding of the many different values of bicycling (it is fun, healthy and green).  Students should make sure their poster follows the contest rules by using the checklist below. The winners will be selected by a panel of individuals from the Bicycling Industry.

As a result of this activity, students should develop an understanding of:

  • Designing a poster in light of information given.
  • Explore the causes, consequences and possible solutions to persistent, contemporary and emerging issues.
  • How to act on personal and social issues, develop decision-making skills, and provide them with a foundation on which to base decisions they will face as citizens.

Each participating school must choose one school winner that they will send to the state coordinator. Each state will have three winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd). Each state's first place winner receives a bike, light and helmet. There will also be one national winner. In addition to the bike, light & helmet the national winner will receive a 3 day all-expense paid trip (for two) to Washington DC for the 2013 National Bike Summit.

The National winning school will receive ten branded bike docs (bike parking for 20 bikes) and the Hub system. The Hub is an active transportation tracking system. The Hub makes it easy, fun, and educational for a school to implement a walking & biking incentive program. Hardware, technology and a web-site gives students an easy way to count their trips; a place to watch the total participation of students; and a piece of cake way to administer the incentives to give to students.

The state contest coordinator from the National winning state will receive $250.

Schools must submit posters must be submitted by March 1st.

What are the responsibilities of the state coordinator?
To ensure the success of the contest we are looking for state coordinator's to implement the contest in each state. The coordinator will receive a Poster Contest Guide that will easily describe how to execute the contest. A state coordinator will be responsible for communicating about the contest to elementary school principals, fifth grade teachers and parents. The responsibilities will also include collecting the winning posters, determining the top three posters and sending in the state winner to Saris headquarters for national award consideration. The communication will be primarily through email. For more information about becoming a state coordinator please contact Heather Fortune This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. What are the hopes for the contest and how will it help increase cycling?
The SCG Poster Contest will engage fifth grade students to think about the inherent benefits of the bicycle. It will increase the student's knowledge about the importance of the bicycle as a viable mode of transportation. The contest provides a fun activity to get students excited about learning and provides teachers a creative way to introduce healthy living concepts. Increasing student's awareness of the bicycle is the first step toward helping them to ride a bike more often.
